Closed Ipad password repair

Our daughter set up an iPad air when we bought it about 4 years ago and we have had no problem since. A couple of days ago it needed a passcode to open. Since we did not have a password we phone our daughter to give us the password but the iPad says "wrong password". So I decided to delete everything and start from the beginning using Itunes on my computer which I did successfully. However, when I go to open the iPad it still demands a password.
