My wife and I, who are both in our eighties, live in a 2/3 bedroom semi-detached bungalow near Colchester and share use of a septic tank located next door. The owner of the property has told me that he intends to replace the septic tank with a Klargester Sewage treatment Unit at a cost of £9,300 in order to comply with the new General Binding Rules and we are expected to pay half. In view of the cost it makes more sense for us to consider installing our own system and we have been looking at The Septic Tank and Soak Away Kit offered by Septic Tank. ( ). There is a video on the site showing what is needed if you are not familiar. This unit has the advantage of being low cost, requiring minimal excavation and once installed and working is completely self contained. The work will involve installing the unit in my garden lawn as per the video. Our current patio which is slabs laid on concrete would need to be broken up in order to gain access to the current septic tank pipework which will need to be blocked off. A new pipe would then need to be laid to connect our sewage to the new unit. The patio and garden would then need to be restored. Access is somewhat limited as there are fields at the rear and access is only possible during non growing season and with farmers permission. We have a garage which gives access to the rear and believe that a micro digger might get through the rear door. The path to the rear garden is 1 metre in width. We would like to have the work done ASAP before the owner next door arranges the replacement. We would like to know if you would be able to install this unit and get some idea of the cost of the complete job (we will supply the Converter Kit) incl VAT. According to the video it should only take about 3 hours to install the actual kit. I appreciate that a site visit will be required before a firm price can be agreed.
