Closed Sit on Mower Repair

Hi I have a sit on mower murray 8/30 and it drives well but when i go on the lawn to cut it will not move when engaged to cut. The belts and pulleys are all intact but i have noticed a spring snapped but i am unsure what it is and what it serves.
