Closed Cleaning dial on washing machine

Our old Zanussi still works, but letters on dial have become unclear and clear cover on dial is dirty. How do we remove this cover without damaging operation of dial. Also door lock does not work. We have someone staying here next week, so want this fixed before Sunday. We could possibly do it ourselves if we knew it was safe to pull off dial cover.
