Closed Suing for non-completion of building work

I had building work scheduled for August 1st, for which I have paid a deposit of over £4,ooo. The work has been started but repeatedly delayed. I have been given a resumption date of 17th, but don't trust it and, if it doesn't happen, I will be put to so much expense and trouble that I would consider suing for damages. Is this possible and what should I expect?
