Closed Knocking of pipes every day in my loft

I have severe knocking of pipes every day in the loft above my bathroom. This has happened many times (on and off) for the last year but recently it is happening at least 100 times each day. The problem must be the pipes in my loft as the sound comes from above my bathroom.
