Closed clean up and speed up lap top computer

I have a laptop Vaio computer which has slowed down and I think it would benefit from a health check and clean up. However, it is about 4 years old, so I'd be glad for advice first to know if I would be better off getting a new lap top, in which case I'd need help to transfer data.
