Loving and caring for the animals

29/06/2016

Animal Biology is the integrated study of the enormous variety of animal life on Earth. It examines the evolutionary origins of the various animal groups and their ecology, behaviour and conservation. These courses are  unusual as they deliver distance learning courses which are written and taught by educational professionals.

Cylex 1. What is the importance of Animal biology and care?

Animal Biology and Care Ltd: Animal biology and care provides an alternative education platform for those who cannot attend college for whatever reason and/or cannot find the study they want within the regular education framework.  We have produced courses that can be shown as solid evidence of the ability to study for degree programmes through alternative learning. We have UK colleges that will consider our levels 4 and 5 courses as alternative entry to their degree and top-up degree courses.

Cylex 2. Who can sign up for your courses? Do you require the per on to have a certain degree before they sign up?

Animal Biology and Care Ltd: No, not at all. Anyone can sign up for our courses as we have a conversation with them to make sure the course they wish to do is right for them.  We also offer an education consultancy to give guidance and information about what to do next and work around family and work issues.

Cylex 3. What sort of courses are there available (what subjects)? Which ones are the most requested by people? Why is that you think?

Animal Biology and Care Ltd: All our courses are linked to animal care, welfare and ethics whether it's for cat and dog care or wildlife conservation and ecology. Zoo animal welfare is a popular course as it challenges the way animals are kept in captivity and emphasises species-specific and individual behaviour as the way to accommodate such animals. The most requested courses are the zoo animal welfare closely followed by animal behaviour, animal science and welfare and the regulated qualifications of animal nursing assistant. We set up the courses to attract students who want to improve the lives of non-human animals whether they be companion animals, captive animals or wild ones. These are the factors which are linked to the choice of course.

Cylex 4. Is there a certificate or a degree given at the end of the course? Where is that recognized? Where can it be of use?

Animal Biology and Care Ltd: We offer a certificate of completion which is set at a pass, merit or distinction level depending on the final grading of assignments. Certain courses are accredited at the moment by the CPD Standards Office and UK Rural Skills.  We want our courses to be recognised as being quality learning they match the standards of the UK regulators of formal education. Additionally, our status as a recognised centre for a UK awarding body can only be achieved because of our education standards overall and the systems in place for the learner's benefit.  Being a recognised centre by a UK awarding body is our favoured way of showing course standards are high.

Cylex 5. How long does it take to complete the course? Are there any exams?

Animal Biology and Care Ltd: It depends on the course! Some courses can take a month or two whilst others will take up to 12 months. However it does depend on the effort put in by the student. We do not have exams as such but each unit of a course has an assignment which tests knowledge and understanding. Getting assessment right is the most important part of course quality so when someone achieves the distinction grading they have done so according to application of the proper standards.

Cylex 6. Why follow the distance learning courses that you offer?

Animal Biology and Care Ltd: Our courses are set at various levels of study from level 2 (like GCSE) to degree and each is designed to match the advertised level of study. Many distance learning courses are shown as being level 3, 4 etc. but when you see them they are not matching their study level in particular when it comes to the assessment of learning. Assessment is usually way below the supposed demand of the course and people go away thinking they can do A-level study work when they can't. Our courses provide an all-round education experience and not just for the subject matter being studied. We'll teach students how to set out an essay properly, reference their work, read and understand questions properly as well as guiding them toward further study perhaps at university.

As the home study courses extend, there is a suite of additional courses available now in biochemistry, plant science and forensic science. We can do the latter course because our director has a post graduate qualification in forensic science.
