Formed on July 1st 2004, Community was created to become the first 21st century trade union. However, Community has roots which stretch back over a hundred years. Community was formed by the merger of the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation (ISTC) and the National Union of Knitwear, Footwear and Apparel Trades (KFAT). Prior to this merger, the ISTC had merged with the Power Loom Carpet Weaver and Textile Union (PLCWTWU) and the National League of the Blind and Disabled (NLBD). The PLCWTWU was a regional union based in Kidderminster which saw the merger as the best way to protect their remaining membership.
