This provided a sustainable source of food as the Cape Dutch migrated during the Great Trek from the Cape Colony (Cape Town) into the interior of South Africa (Pretoria). The word Biltong's roots go back to these 18th century Dutch pioneers as they crossed South Africa. It derived from two Dutch words, Bil Buttock and Tong Strips, biltong was simply narrow strips of meat, dried in the sun, as a means of preserving meat.
