The AMU receives acutely ill medical patients from primary care via GP referral and referral from the Emergency Department. The unit is divided into AMU Assessment and AMU Ward. The unit is supported by the Acute GP Service within AMU Assessment and the Rapid Response Team. To develop a department that works continually to improve patient-centred care, focusing on a professional, multidisciplinary approach, supported by respect, best practice, good communication, and a willingness to change the way we work. This is a 23 bed assessment area with a seated area for up to 10 patients. On arrival all patients are assessed by a nurse and doctor with the most seriously ill patients seen first. Initial investigations such as blood tests, X rays and an ECG may be requested and an initial management plan decided.

Until the late 1980s, the Practice premises were in Ermington Terrace, just on the other side of Mutley Plain, and at Estover Health Centre. A substantial change in personnel and growing practice list led to the development of the purpose built WOOLWELL MEDICAL CENTRE in 1990 and the move to the extensively modernised premises at LISSON GROVE in 1992.
