Started life as far back as 1927 when local business clubbed together to form Filton aerodrome. This was later to beome the birthplace of Concorde. Two years later farmland at Whitchurch was purchased at Whitchurch and Bristol airport was born.In 1930 HRH Prince George officially opened Bristol airport and this was one of the first civil airports in the country. The airport continued to develope with numbers increasing from 1000 in its first year to 4000 in 1939. As with all civil airfields the air ministry took over the running of the airport once war broke out. During this period many statesman and actors used Bristol airport as a means of travelling to the United States via Lisborn and the azores. From the end of the war in 1945 to 1955 Bristol Corporation fought a 10 year battle with the civil aviation authority to have a city airpoprt in Bristol.
The town of Ashford has expanded substantially in the last few years, particularly due to its position on the rail link between London and Europe. One particular area of growth has been the estate of Park Farm to the south of Ashford, near to the village of Kingsnorth. Furley Park Primary School was built and opened in September 2000 in response to the growth in population in the area. The school is sited on one side of the estate and overlooks woodland and fields. The building is on one level with an administration area, large hall and kitchen as well as 14 classrooms and a library. The classes accommodate 30 children each with two classes in each year group. Staffing consists of class teachers with the support of teaching assistants, secretary, caretaker, deputy head and headteacher. The governors are involved in the life of the school and there is an active Parent Teacher Association.
Gateford Park Primary School is set in the middle of the large new housing development of Gateford Park, to the north of Worksop.Our school was built in April 2000. On our very first day we only had 23 pupils! Since we opened in 2000 our roll has grown from 38 to over 215. Over time there have been a number of additions to the original school building. All children are encouraged to take personal pride in their appearance and to gain a sense of identity and belonging by wearing the Gateford Park School uniform. At Manor Park we try and ensure that when delivering a broad, balanced curriculum we provide the children with as many opportunities as possible. There are a variety of educational visits linked to our thematic curriculum and children across the school attend swimming lessons and all children have been coached by a sports specialist (Sportwise, BCFC and ARTIS), music teachers (steel pans and choir), environmentalists, dancers, science workshops, first aid tutors (St John's ambulance) and so on. Outside the statutory curriculum children have also had the opportunity to join in rowing clubs, competing against children across the city. The children have appeared on National TV and newspapers. They have won a range of design and make competions resulting in their work being published for example, Poetry and Christmas Card designs.
We provide a breakfast club from 8.00 am for all children run by our own school staff.There is also an early bird computer club from 8.00am. Our out of school activities are run by a combination of school staff, CRB checked professional coaches and liasion with sports development. These activities range from girls and boys football teams, netball, cheerleading, gymnastics, dance and drama to art, kick boxing, activefit and many more. We are a Creative Partnership school which allows us to enhance our curriculum creatively by working with a wide range of professionals ranging from kitemakers to aerial performers. There are self-guided nature trails which allow visitors to enjoy the park throughout its constantly changing seasons. Younger children will enjoy watching the ducks and peacocks or playing in the adventure playground. On most Sundays throughout the open season they can ride on the newly extended miniature railway, or take part in a free Crafty Kids workshop in the Farm Museum. There are also special children's events throughout the year. Normanby Hall Museum and Country Park is the ideal place for a short break. Our caravan site is in a beautifully secluded location at the south end of the park, with fresh water supply and chemical disposal point. In addition, our new five-van touring site is now open during the summer season.
