Ashgate Croft is the largest of 10 special schools in Derbyshire and, as such, we offer a full range of opportunities for children and students with special needs aged 2 to 19 years. We believe that education for our pupils includes not only the National Curriculum but, just as importantly, life skills and social skills. We aim, therefore, to teach pupils the skills necessary for self-care and living that others may take for granted. We want all of our pupils to eventually leave school to become successful members of the wider community, hence our motto is "Building Skills for Life". We concentrate on providing for individual needs so that all of our pupils can be encouraged to achieve their best. For some this may be walking independently, or perhaps managing to write their own name. For others, it may be gaining a certificate of achievement in literacy or mathematics.
We aim to provide a caring environment in which children learn to respect each other and their elders and to enable the personal development of each child to proceed without hindrance. This includes the development of social and artistic skills as well as intellectual ones. We also aim to encourage interest and to help children acquire relevant knowledge. We try to give all children as many opportunities for success as possible, because the child who is successful has something to be proud of, something to set their personal standards by. We encourage our children to care; this is not only in their work and behaviours, but also in dealings with other people. We encourage our children to develop relationships of quality with each other and with adults. Good relationships help our children to feel secure and they need this feeling of security to achieve the greatest success.

The school is a centre of opportunity for everyone and caters for pupils of all abilities. For pupils entering the school in September no major changes in the organisation or management of the school curriculum are planned, outside those in line with the continued implementation of the national curriculum. Minor adjustments in the amount of time allocated to subjects may be necessary depending upon the staffing and other resources available within the school. The school is a living organisation and as such changes are made annually to improve the school and develop the opportunities available to pupils.
We offer several extra curricular school activities such as Football, Chess, Netball, Drama and Dance and the School Choir all of which are very popular with the children. Each year the whole school take part in a Christmas production. During the course of the school year, trips are arranged to such places as Braeside and the local theatre to enhance the classroom curriculum. Music lessons are available to children through the Swindon Music Cooperative.
We are a large and caring school where everyone works together in order for our children to reach their full potential in all aspects of their development. Our aim is to help all our children grow in self-esteem and self-discipline by developing a sense of pride in their work, their school and the wider community. We believe that a successful school cannot work in isolation and we welcome the ideas and support that have helped us grow into a very popular school. We consider ourselves to be a caring school achieving high standards. For us the key to success is the relationships between parents, teachers and pupils. We aim to have respect as the cornerstone of our work and try hard to ensure it is embedded in all we do. All children are encouraged to achieve as highly as they can and we support them in this. In turn we are supported by our governors who work closely with the school to ensure all our children’s needs are met.

They aim to provide a community which will enable all who belong to make the most of their abilities and be happy. We work particularly hard to help our students gain academic knowledge, learn practical skills and develop their power to reason. But we also try to promote learning in many other aspects of life, social, moral, spiritual, aesthetic and physical. We seek to achieve our objectives within a broad and balanced framework that gives a central place to the National Curriculum. We want our students to be keen to learn and to be able to concentrate their minds on a task. We want them to respect accuracy; to be able to handle numbers with confidence and to express themselves effectively in speech and writing. We want them to be confident in their use of modern technology. They should be able to solve problems, look for evidence, consider both sides of a question and think independently. They should be able to work effectively either as an individual or as a member of a group.
