Age Concern as an active unit working for the welfare of the elderly in North Lincolnshire, began in 1973, under the banner of Age Concern Scunthorpe. However, the earliest minutes held at head quarters in Francis Street date back to June 1951, at a meeting of the Borough of Scunthorpe Old People's Welfare Committee. A Pop-In-Parlour was opened in Clarke Street by the Mayor of Scunthorpe in 1977. In late 1979, at the demise of Age Concern South Humberside, Age Concern Scunthorpe and District, and Age Concern Grimsby extended their boundaries to cover the void, and Age Concern Scunthorpe and Distict became Age Concern North Lincolnshire.

As part of our commitment we can: Offer advice, suggesting ways to solve difficulties or provide you with the details of people who may be able to help. Focus attention on issues of importance to older people, making certain that your voice is heard. We may be able to assist you in one telephone call, or we may be able to make you an appointment to see one of our Advisors either at Clarence House or at your home if you are housebound. ACH offers an assisted bathing service in our own bathing facility here at Haslewey. If you have difficulty bathing, and think you would benefit from this service, one of our qualified care assistants will help you bath or shower comfortably and safely. Trips are organised through Age Concern twice or three times a year. Last April a group enjoyed five days in Teignmouth, and in November there is a 'Turkey and Tinsel' trip to Great Yarmouth with the coach collecting from the Haslewey Centre and returning there at the end of the holiday. This is another very useful service which we provide here at Age Concern Haslemere. Laundry bags can be purchased from the Age Concern office. Each laundry bag can be filled to a maximum weight of 9lbs. Bags are taken to the laundry on Monday mornings where items are washed, ironed and returned to the Centre by Thursday lunchtime of the same week.

People over 60 may be entitled to one or a number of benefits including: Attendance Allowance, Carers Allowance, Pension Credit, Housing and Council Tax Benefit. Some benefits are based on a person’s health, physical or mental disability, others on the person’s financial situation. A number of benefits are interlinked so that receipt of one benefit triggers or increases entitlement to another. Entitlement rules can be quite complicated, and everyone’s circumstances are different. It is therefore very important to get expert advice on what you may be entitled to.

Later Matters aims to: raise awareness of service provision within the region and increase opportunities for partnership working, give BME elders, carers and organisations a voice in the design and quality of services available to them; and provide organisations with a resource to measure how accessible their services are to BME older people and plan for future improvements.

Age Concern Bucks receive referrals from Social Services, relatives, Health Visitors, Doctors, Nurses, or anyone in contact with an older person who is aware their circumstances fit the criteria. All referees are asked to check first with the older person (client) that they would like someone to visit them regularly. After receiving the referral, the Age Concern organiser will contact the client to arrange a visit. As long as the client is appropriate for the scheme the organiser will endeavour to introduce them to a volunteer. All volunteers are interviewed and references received before joining our organisation. After introduction the organiser remains in contact with both volunteer and client on a regular basis. If either party is not happy with the 'match' the organiser will place them both back on the list until a more suitable arrangement can be made.
