Since its creation in 1927 Beatrix Potter School has continued to provide high standards of education in the community. The schools’ name was derived from the author’s visits to her former Governess who lived by our local common in Baskerville Road and to whom she wrote, using her characters to illustrate her letters. Beatrix Potter also drew inspiration from the varied wildlife she saw on her visits to Wandsworth Common. The school was founded in 1927 although there was on the site a school before this, this tin (it was located in a corrugated hut) school is recorded (1901), we have recently obtained a picture from a former pupil of 1916 of this tin school. We were re-modelled in 1933 and 1993, its only interruption to its role in providing education for the local community was in 1939 when the school was evacuated to Shamley Green, Guildford until 1943 as a result of the 1939-1945 war.
We pride ourselves in creating a stimulating environment which helps our children to progress academically, socially, emotionally and physically to their maximum potential. The staff work together to build a centre of excellence in which we aim to achieve high academic standards whilst ensuring that the special needs of all pupils are met. The school is bright and attractive and is set in spacious grounds surrounded by a variety of trees and shrubs. There are two hard surface playgrounds and a large field used for dry weather playtimes, sports and recreation for the children. The playground is securely surrounded by a fence which separates and protects the children from the car park. The Nursery building has its own hard surface playground, a wildlife garden and a grass area with large play equipment.

Our priorities for improvement have been to continue to help the children manage life and learning more effectively: partly by developing their role in the community. We have embedded a number of programmes to help us achieve this, and each year group has focused on projects to develop local links. We have put intervention/support strategies in place to help raise attainment of low achievers – especially numeracy. Implementing the Foundation Stage best practice will raise attainment in writing at Key Stage 1 for our younger children.
