The school occupies a substantial Victorian building in South Woodford, once a large private home. Over time the house has been adapted by us to accommodate classrooms, an I.C.T. lab, a library, dining facilities, changing rooms and offices. In a separate building to the rear of the main house is our school hall, used for daily assembly and to provide a full programme of physical education, music, drama, games and other extra-curricular activities. The hall is in use by children of all ages continually throughout the day.

Since its creation in 1927 Beatrix Potter School has continued to provide high standards of education in the community. The schools’ name was derived from the author’s visits to her former Governess who lived by our local common in Baskerville Road and to whom she wrote, using her characters to illustrate her letters. Beatrix Potter also drew inspiration from the varied wildlife she saw on her visits to Wandsworth Common. The school was founded in 1927 although there was on the site a school before this, this tin (it was located in a corrugated hut) school is recorded (1901), we have recently obtained a picture from a former pupil of 1916 of this tin school. We were re-modelled in 1933 and 1993, its only interruption to its role in providing education for the local community was in 1939 when the school was evacuated to Shamley Green, Guildford until 1943 as a result of the 1939-1945 war.

It is important to us that Millbanks pupils enjoy all aspects of their education and learn a variety of skills as well as an appreciation of the diversity and wealth of interest in their City. Oak Lodge is a maintained Community Special School offering 165 day places for students aged between 11 - 19 who have a range of learning difficulties. In particular, the school offers a variety of teaching methods and interventions informed by our knowledge and understanding of autism, which has been developed over many years. Almost half of students currently placed at Oak Lodge have a diagnosed Autistic Spectrum Condition or an associated pervasive developmental disorder.
From the late 1840s there was a steady expansion of the Catholic Church in the borough of Enfield. This began initially as a result of the Potato Famine in Ireland and the 1851 census reveals the presence of a small Irish community in Upper Edmonton. These numbers were subsequently boosted by waves of Catholic immigrants from Italy, Poland and elsewhere who settled in other areas of the borough including New Southgate. The Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes was established in the Diocese of Westminster in 1923. The house which is currently the presbytery was purchased then together with over an acre of orchard surrounding it. Mass was said in the presbytery until the church was built in 1935. Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School was built in 1972 on the land owned by the Church to provide an education for the children of the parish.
