Ronald McDonald House Charities was formed in 1974, from an unlikely alliance in the USA between the Philadelphia Eagles football team, a hospital in Pennsylvania and a McDonald’s Franchisee. On hearing the plight of a young couple whose child was seriously ill with cancer but who were unable to find accommodation near to the hospital so they could be with her, they together established the first “home away from home.” After the success of the first Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald House Charities was founded, with the aim of extending this support to children and families who needed it across the world.
