Crest Co-operative was established in 1998. The company evolved from a project run by Scope. This project was established with one of the very first lottery grants and the aim of the project was to establish a community co-operative to help disabled and unemployed people increase their skills and gain employment – either within the co-operative or to move on to sustainable employment within the community. The project ran for 3 years and at the end of the project the co-operative became a not for profit limited company. A further lottery application was granted for the co-operative to develop vocational training courses to help disadvantaged people who had become socially excluded to gain life skills as well as real work experience in a supportive environment. The co-operative established two community businesses within which the training could be delivered.

We are a primary special school in North Birmingham where 'individuals are valued for themselves and all are expected to give of their best'. We have around 90 pupils on roll with a range of needs, including moderate learning difficulties and autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs). Our highly skilled and enthusiastic staff work with the children and their individual needs to promote independence, communication and social skills. We also work closely with families in encouraging our pupils to be lifelong learners and valued members of their community. The children play a key part in their learning. When asked about what they enjoyed doing at school, the answers ranged from 'using the soft play and sensory room' to 'practical activities in topics'. They also thought that 'practising a lot' and 'when we can see, touch and listen' made it easier for them to learn. The children evaluate their own work through the use of pictures and symbols and are keen to do well.
