The surgery is named after Dr Daniel Stenhouse, who was the first doctor in our practice. Dr Stenhouse was born in Auchterarder, Scotland, in 1848 and graduated from Edinburgh University in 1876. He married Mary Worrall of Arnold and was a Medical Missionary in Chu Chia Province in China until 1886, working for the New Connection Methodist Church. In 1886 he became a general practitioner in Arnold and practised from Ebenezer House, which was the old farmhouse at the bottom of Worrall Avenue, until 1897. Oak View is a medium secure hospital that provides a safe environment for the assessment, treatment and care of up to 17 young people, aged 12 to 18 (male or female), who have been detained under the Mental Health Act. The facility is in a pleasant semi-rural location, less than 3 1/2 miles from the M25 and within an hour of central London by train. Each young person at Oak View is assigned to a care team, with a named Key Worker. In collaboration with the young person, their care team will draw up an individual plan for them. Being part of the process helps the young person to understand and be actively involved in their health care on an ongoing basis. Oak View recognises the importance of the family unit and is committed to working closely with family members and carers for the long-term benefit of the young people in its care. The British Dental Nurses and Assistants Examining Board was founded in 1943, but it was in 1936 that Mr Philip Grundy, a general practitioner from Leyland in Lancashire, first envisaged a qualifying examination for dental surgery assistants. He consulted various well known people in the dental profession to see if any organisation was interested in setting up an examining board. He travelled widely, speaking to officials of the British Dental Association, Incorporated Dental Society (IDS), the Public Dental Services Association (PDSA) and the Deans of Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds, London, Manchester and Newcastle Dental Hospitals. Finally, in 1942, Colonel J Hawkins, Dean of Birmingham Dental School, agreed to assist Mr Grundy in forming a Board of Examiners for Dental Nurses and Assistants.
