Equine Thermography is completely non-invasive and non-contact. It is ‘real-time’, revealing changes in physiology as they are happening rather than looking at tissue after it has been damaged. Temperature change is the first thing that changes when things are going wrong. Equine Thermography will reveal those heat changes. A thermogram provides information on the normal and abnormal functioning of the sensory and sympathetic nervous systems, vascular dysfunction, myofascial trauma and local inflammatory processes in the horse. Thermography is an excellent adjunct to clinical examination as well as being complementary to other imaging techniques such as radiology, ultrasonography, and scintigraphy. A human touch cannot identify changes in temperature of less than 2-3 degrees, however, a thermal camera can “see” and detect changes of less than 0.1 degree, making it easy to identify problem areas where heat is not obvious to the touch.
