It was formed in response to a determination to achieve a progressive organisation, based on peer support, engaging with all disabled people whatever their impairment type. Disabled people and carers run the organisation, and the management and membership reflects the diversity of impairment types, and includes disabled people from varying backgrounds and age groups; carers and people recovering from drug and alcohol dependency. Since inception in 2007, our membership has grown to over 100 and is set to increase to 300 within the next year. Out of our existing membership, about 50% are currently actively involved in DOTS activities.
The Diversity Group was set up in 2006, with the aim of eliminating barriers within employment, education and training for minority groups in the UK. Throughout the last few decades, equality and diversity has evolved into a part of our everyday lives. There are however a vast majority of people in the UK from minority groups or backgrounds that don't believe this is the case. Through bad experiences, media bias or their own expectations, these people feel that they are discriminated against and do not have the chance to pursue their ultimate career.

The Birches School provides education for primary aged (2-11 Years) pupils with severe and profound learning difficulties, many of whom have additional sensory and physical impairments. As well as some children with autism. There are six places for pupils with Social, Emotional and Behaviour Difficulties. The school, which is maintained by Manchester Education Authority, is a non-denominational day school. The building is situated approximately four miles to the south of the City Centre. Buses come in and out of the city along Princess Parkway to Nell Lane. The school is on Newholme Road, which is off Elizabeth Slinger Road, off Nell Lane, opposite the main entrance to Withington Hospital. The school is within easy access of shops, libraries, neighbouring schools, colleges, hospitals, Manchester’s Universities and public transport.
