When choosing a drama school, it’s important to think carefully about the size of school you’d like to go to. ALRA is one of the smaller schools in the CDS (the Conference of Drama Schools), with a student body of around 140 across both campuses. This means everybody gets to know everybody else, and the staff and students have a strong working relationship. There is an open door policy in the ALRA offices - students pop in all the time with queries and concerns, or just to have a bit of a catch-up.
The school is located on the eastern edge of Romsey, Hampshire, a town of approximately 18, 000 people. The Mountbatten School was opened in 1969. It was built on land formerly in the ownership of the Earl Mountbatten's Broadlands Estate, and was fortunate to enjoy the personal patronage of Lord Louis and, with his specific approval, adopted his crest as the School Emblem. Principle among Lord Louis' tenets was the pursuit of excellence and this is a key philosophy of the school. Mountbatten serves a predominantly rural catchment of feeder schools, with a catchment area extending from the City boundary of Southampton to the County boundary of Wiltshire. It also serves part of the town of Romsey, being the larger of the two secondary schools in the town.
