We also help with form filling mainly for welfare benefits. We offer a home visiting service. If we cannot help we will signpost or refer to an appropriate agency. Healthy eating is important for everyone. So too is enjoying your food. Many people assume that eating a healthy diet and enjoying your food are not compatible. However there are no ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ foods just ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ diets. Therefore to eat ‘healthily’, there should be no need to cut out foods you currently enjoy – although eating some foods less often or in smaller portions may be worth considering.

Age Concern Lancashire is an independent local charity so all our running costs have to be raised each year through appeals, grant applications, events and other fundraising ventures. Demand for our help increases year on year and we rely on the generosity and time given by our volunteers and the donations we receive to fund many of our vital services. This generosity helps to improve and support the quality of life for all older people throughout the county. Age Concern Lancashire can only survive if people keep giving donations. Although we get grants for some of our activities we have no regular guaranteed income. However much money you give, it will all be spent on services and activities for local people within Lancashire.
Age Concern Manchester is continuing to develop this popular project which is aimed at promoting positive attitudes towards ageing. Our 'Big Lottery'-funded Ageing Well groups run in many areas of Manchester. It was originally stimulated by research that suggested that social activities could be as effective as fitness activities in increasing life-expectancy, and that enhanced social activities may help to increase the quality and length of life. The Ageing Well groups aim to provide activities with a social emphasis for older people who do not use day centre facilities but would like and would benefit from wider social contact. The activities on offer are varied and include quizzes, art and craft, card games, gentle exercise, occasional trips and specific health information sessions – hopefully something to suit most tastes!
Information and advice is available to older people and their carers on a whole range of issues. If we can't help, we should know someone who can. For people who are housebound it is often possible to arrange for someone to visit. Legal Advice: Once a fortnight we hold a legal clinic at our Swan Street offices for people wanting advice on subjects like making a will and arranging power of attorney.
Age Concern Manchester's counselling service was originally the brainchild of Dr. May Duddle, a retired psychiatrist who worked mainly in the Manchester area. Amongst other things she had set up the Rape Crisis Centre at St. Mary's Hospital and had trained the psychosexual therapists. Then in the early 1990s she read a book Living, Loving and Ageing, written by Sally Greengross (the then Director of Age Concern England) and Wendy Greengross (a GP). The book prompted Dr. Duddle to have discussions with Age Concern England and as a result a number of pilot counselling projects were set up - including the one in Manchester.
Our Care Centres offer a stimulating and enjoyable day out for older people who would otherwise have to stop at home all day. Activities are organised within the centres with occasional trips out for those who want them. A small daily attendance charge is made for these services. The day centres are open all year round, Mondays to Fridays. Transport to and from the centres is provided as well as a healthy lunch and refreshments. Sometimes Adult Social Care at Manchester City Council or the Mental health Joint Commissioning Executive will contribute towards costs. Normally day care is available as the result of a referral by the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust, by the Social Services Department, by a GP, or often a combination of these agencies.
There are three centres that provide Age Concern’s home care and day care in Manchester, in the North at Miles Platting, in Central at Gorton, and in the South at Crossacres in Wythenshawe. All three centres provide information, advice and support to older people with higher support needs, to their families, their carers and to fellow professionals. Although the home care and day care services are available separately, the purpose of the service is to provide the support network that will make it possible for older people to live longer in their own homes. It is possible to combine home care and day care as a co-ordinated package where required.
All three of our Care Centres also have a team of home support workers who provide care in people's own homes. Home care is normally provided on a regular basis, seven days a week, following a home visit and a detailed assessment of the client's needs. This service is available during evenings and weekends as well as during the day. The home support team can also provide personal assistants for a special trip out. Home support can be arranged directly and is sometimes arranged through the Adult Social Care at Manchester City Council who can contribute towards the costs. All of Age Concern's free services such as benefits advice, advocacy and so on are available to home support clients.
