Welfare Rights Visiting Service – offering advice on benefits for older people and their carers in the City. Financial concerns are a constant source of worry particularly to those struggling to make ends meet on a basic retirement pension. Often older people have special needs relating to their medical or physical requirements and they may, unknowingly, be eligible for additional help with these. With the advent of Pension Credit in October 2003, many more older people are now able to claim extra benefit. In addition, many people who have disabilities and need help and care on a regular basis may be able to claim Attendance Allowance. These are just two benefits but there are others, including help with rent payments, community charge bills, allowances for those caring for others and additional help with dental and optical charges.
We offer advice and information on a wide range of matters of concern to older people and their carers: Pensions and benefits, Residential care, Sheltered housing and luncheon clubs. Our reception desk is open to callers and visitors and if we are unable to help you directly we can usually put you in touch with someone who can. I n addition to our own services we have regular sessions in our offices when the Pension Service are present to give advice on benefits and pensions. Surgeries are held twice a month, on the 2nd Tuesday and the 4th Thursday between 10am and 12 midday.

The ACIW befriending service supports older people over 50 years of age who are socially isolated or who lack confidence as a result of a recent life changing experience. We offer three types of befriending service. Our response time to requests for help will depend on us having a suitable volunteer in the client’s locality. 1-1 befriending – a suitable volunteer visits the client in their home. Activities may include chatting, reading, walking or trips out and are mutually agreed. Telephone befriending – older people are telephoned weekly or fortnightly depending on need. This service offers social contact and provides clients with the opportunity to share any concerns they may have.‘Circle of Friends’ telephone conference calls – a group of 6 people take part in a weekly chat together via a conference call over an eight week period. At the end of this time everyone meets up for tea and cakes so that they can put a face to a voice.
