Community Home Day Care is seen as a model of good practice nationally. The project came into being following research into the needs of older people in the region. An innovative response to the needs of isolated older people, it has proved extremely successful and popular. The scheme involves a volunteer Day Care Host opening up their home once a week or fortnight to 3 or 4 local older people. Transport is provided to the host's home. There the clients enjoy a nutritious hot midday meal, and stimulating activities in a friendly, caring atmosphere. The daily plan is very flexible and because of the small number of guests, individual tastes can be catered for.
Age Concern's Day Centres and Clubs provide an all important day out for frail older people - an opportunity to meet and make new friends, enjoy the company of others and take part in a variety of activities. We believe that our Centres provide a safe and stimulating environment for our members - and provide many carers with an invaluable period of regular respite. There are 16 Day Care Centres in the region, staffed by teams of volunteers who work very hard to make the day enjoyable for all. Specialised transport provides frail older people with the opportunity to become more involved in community life, e.g. having regular social contact through attending our Day Care Clubs, shopping, trips, events and excursions. Our aim is to enable older people to improve their quality of life and to help them maintain their independence and continue living in their own homes for as long as possible.

A full programme of activity ideas is provided, which will assist in planning work with older people. It will also help the carer to think of new activities and expand the range of existing ones. The day is run by a qualified "Extend" tutor and gives "hands on" experience of organising and leading games, activities and exercise for older people, including discussion on what is required for provision of an activities session in the caring environment. The training days are aimed at those who care for older people in any capacity, to stimulate and interest the person being cared for. The National Care Standards Commission has specified a requirement for residential and nursing homes to provide a minimum half an hour per day of activities.

In addition, Age UK Hull takes Social Work students on a placement basis to provide training and 'real-world' experience in a variety of situations. People contact the organisation for advice or information on housing, benefits, health, social issues, personal problems, and all other issues that may affect them or their family's lives. Contact your local office regardless of the size of the problem. We are very keen on raising awareness of health issues. Leaflets are available at our Porter Street office. We have awareness sessions and campaign to promote better health opportunities for older people. The Ageing Well and Falls Project in particular focuses on health issues relating to older people. The Day Service is based at the Holderness Road methodist Church and is available to anyone aged over 50 offering them an opportunity to meet new friends and take part in a variety of stimulating activities. Personal care is not offered, therefore members must be independent and be able to get around the centre and care for themselves.
