The Youth Music Centre was established in Bigwood House, Hampstead Garden Suburb, in 1967 and has since become one of the foremost Saturday morning music schools London. In 2007, we celebrated our 40th anniversary with a gala concert to a capacity audience in St Jude’s Church Hampstead Garden Suburb.
The essential aim of YMC is to create a happy environment within which young people from the age of eighteen months to seventeen years can come together to enjoy making music.
YMC provides beginner, and in some cases more advanced, tuition in orchestral instruments. Children are also encouraged to join the most suitable orchestra, wind or string ensemble, whether continuing their instrumental tuition at YMC or elsewhere.
At YMC all children are encouraged to progress at their own comfortable pace, without any pressure. Members of the staff can always be counted upon to help children and discuss the children's progress with parents. These are held during the second half of the summer term and are obligatory for all string players and singers, both new and current, to enable us to ascertain which orchestra (and possibly string ensemble) a player is most suited to and which voice class is most appropriate. Entry into either of our two choirs can also be discussed at this time.
