WALKERGATE HOSPITAL

Walkergate Hospital provides longer-term and palliative care for those with functionally limiting long-term conditions, where the emphasis of care is to help relieve symptoms and maximise quality of life. We also provide respite care for those who are cared for at home, and this can be arranged for one or two week periods at a time, a service which is welcomed by both patients and their families and carers.

Our staff here have created a close knit team approach with regular, expert medical input and our nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The team works closely together to assess each patient before discharge and ensure that any extra care and support needs at home are identified and organised with local social services and home care agencies to provide seamless continuity of care Our hospitals here in Newcastle provide many advanced treatments for multiple illnesses and functional and psycho-social problems which can affect any of us, as we get older. Walkergate Hospital provides specialist rehabilitation services on three wards, for older patients who require more time and therapy to help them recover from their episode of illness, and regain independence and confidence after a long hospital stay. Above all, each patient is treated as an individual, able to exercise choice in their care and encouraged to take part in stimulating and interesting activities helping them to keep as mentally and physically active as possible.
