Detailed description:

THE SUMMER PALACE is one of Cardiff's longest serving Cantonese Restaurant. Set within the village of Llandaff, which boasts prestigious historic attractions, such as the Bishops Palace, the Bell Tower ruins and the memorial statues on the Village Green. The Llandaff Cathedral, a renowned landmark throughout Wales, holds host to numerous events. The above business is situated near the green, directly opposite The Old Bishop's Palace or Castle, probably built by William de Brewse, Bishop 1266 - 1287. After Owain Glyndwr's rebellion against Henry VI and his attacks on South Wales in 1402-05 the building was superseded as Bishop's residence by the Palace of Mathem near Chepstow. It is known to have provided she lter for the people of Llandaff during a violent affray between local families in 1597.The enclosing wall and corner towers now remain, the gatehouse showing several features similar to parts of Caerphilly Castle, such as the twin towers, squarebelow but octagonal above, and the shooting hole, cross shaped with circular ends.On the wall to the left of the entrance can be traced the sloping roof of the old Bush Inn, which stood against the still-inhibited gatehouse in the 18th Century. The herb garden now established within the walls is open to the public much of the year. The Restaurant itself is disguised in one of the villages oldest buildings. However not only does it prove a popular restaurant with the locals, but with dinners from within Cardiff and throughout the Vale.
