Short profile:
Master wood carver Charles Oldham specialises in restoration, architectural wood carving, letter cutting, carved and gilded ornament and gesso cutting.
Charles Oldham follows in the grand tradition of English woodcarving, restoring work by master carvers of the past, and creating new works using the same skills passed on by generations of wood carvers.
As well as conserving the objects he restores, Charles believes passionately in preserving the ancient skills he learned from an older generation of carvers. Following on from an Art School education in the 1970s, Charles entered the wood carving trade in London.
He served his apprenticeship in three London workshops run by master carvers of the time, specialising in fireplaces, picture frames and restoring the finest of the carved and gilded furniture and frames passing through the auction houses and the antiques trade.
