Short profile:
The Old School Henstead is a co-educational preparatory school and nursery, catering for pupils between the ages of 2 and a half and 11. Situated on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, it is within easy reach of Lowestoft, Beccles and Halesworth, and has strong links with the leading independent senior schools in the area. This website gives only a brief glimpse of our school.
We are fortunate in having a large, two acre field adjacent to the school buildings. As well as this, there is a purpose built tennis/netball court. Each child has regular lessons in team games and athletics according to season. Children in years 4, 5 and 6 have sports sessions every Wednesday and Friday afternoon and the school has regular fixtures against many local independent schools. Childen in the junior part of the school have weekly P.E. lessons on the field or in the school hall as the weather dictates. Each child has a weekly swimming lesson in the large, modern pool at Bungay.
Detailed description:
Small class sizes, excellent teaching and an insistence on traditional values of hard work and good manners help all pupils at the Old School Henstead to achieve high academic standards.
We cater for pupils of all abilities, offering specialist support where needed at both ends of the ability spectrum.
Early Years and Key Stage 1 classes (Reception, Years 1 and 2) are taught in their class base by their class teacher, the only exceptions being Music and ICT for which children
Children are naturally inquisitive about the world around them and come to school with their own knowledge and perceptions, both of which are constantly evolving. The Old School science curriculum, closely based on the National Curriculum, aims to tap into this enthusiasm to help children to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world about them and relate these to their everyday experiences.
The school is fortunate to have it's own dedicated science room which is well equipped for teaching science at primary level. Pupils from Year 3 to Year 6 are taught in the science room by an experienced specialist science teacher. The science room is adjacent to the computer room, enabling IT to be well embedded into the science curriculum.
As well as traditional "test tubes and bunsen burners" (used mainly in Year 6 classes), the room is equipped with an electronic balance, electronic stop watches, datalogging equipment and a digital microscope which displays onto a large screen using a digital projector.
The school site includes a large fenced off wildlife area and pond which provides a very accessible resource for habitat study, including pond dipping.
Popular after school science clubs take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the winter terms.
