Short profile:

NOMAD Homeless Advice and Support Unit

is an independent organisation which offers advice, support and practical help to homeless or inadequately housed people, or those in housing need. NOMAD believes that everyone has the right to a decent, safe and affordable home.

NOMAD was formed in 1989 by two people who had experienced homelessness themselves, and who recognised that there was a gap in the provision of services for homeless people in Sheffield and Rotherham.

Today, NOMAD is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee, and is funded by grants from national and local bodies and by donations raised through general fund-raising efforts. We have a range of different projects, providing a variety of services in Sheffield.

Detailed description:

NOMAD believes everyone has the right to a decent, safe, affordable home. NOMAD tries to enable homeless people to come to informed decisions in order to improve their situation. NOMAD aims to defend the rights of people threatened with homelessness. NOMAD treats everybody with equal respect and operates a non-discriminatory service. NOMAD offers advice, support and practical help to homeless and inadequately housed people, and to those threatened with homelessness.

The NOMAD Tenancy Support Schemes provide help and support to single people or families who need help with moving into their new home. They also support people who already have a home, but who need help to maintain their tenancy or access services within the local community. The schemes are open to council tenants, Housing Association tenants, homeowners and also those renting from private landlords.

NOMAD can provide short-term support, or longer if needed, and this support usually includes home-visits, telephone contact and help with attending appointments etc. NOMAD support workers can offer help with a number of things, such as:

Moving into a property.

Making benefit claims.

Budgeting.

Finding education, employment

and training opportunities.

Understanding tenancy agreements.

Accessing other agencies and organisations.

Dealing with personal day-to-day problems.

Getting furniture and other household items.

A person is homeless unless they have accommodation in the UK or elsewhere that is reasonable for them to continue to occupy. The term 'homeless' can be used to describe, amongst others, people who are threatened with homelessness within 28 days; people who cannot gain access to their home or stay in their home due to threat of violence; or people who only have access to emergency accommodation such as refugees.

Anyone can be affected by homelessness: families, single people, couples without children, young people, and older people.
