Short profile:
Newcastle Bridges School is a 2-19 community special school (based in a hospital). It serves children and young people in Newcastle upon Tyne and those referred to Newcastle Medical Services and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) from regional and national services. The school is made up of a diverse range of departments;
Detailed description:
The main unit, situated in Kenton College, provides education for both pregnant school girls, school aged mothers and adolescents unable to attend local schools due to anxieties that have led to school phobic behaviours. The Fleming Nuffield Unit educates children from the age of 2 up to 14/15 years of age with a wide range of psychological or psychiatric difficulties. Prudhoe educates similar young people from the age 14/15, but also works with some younger pupils. Many pupils have Learning Disabilities or Difficulties.
Some of the pupils are in Low Secure accommodation. Home Tuition is available for pupils of Newcastle schools unable to attend their mainstream provision for medical reasons. Hospital teaching is at the Great North Children’s Hospital in the RVI for long stay or recurrent patients, (occasionally there are pupils in the cardio-thoracic ward at the Freeman Hospital).
The Roycroft is a Medium Secure Forensic unit for young people aged 12-19. The young people are detained under the Mental Health Act or through the legal system.
