The school provides a rich, broad, balanced curriculum, aimed at stimulating children to high levels of achievement. The curriculum is enriched through the use of special visitors, theme days and weeks, school visits and out of school activities.
The curriculum is enhanced by a range of out of school activities which include the development of sporting skills as well as clubs for art and the environment. A residential visit is held each year as well as other educational visits in support of the curriculum.
Children are able to develop their musical expertise by paying for instrumental music lessons provided by Kirklees Music School. Year 5 children take part in a one year swimming programme. Children in lower Key Stage 2 benefit from specialist music tuition through the New Opportunities programme.
Detailed description:
The school places emphasis on physical education and offers a range of extra-curricular sporting activities. We have strong links with the local Sports' College. This relationship has enhanced the opportunities provided to pupils in physical education through in-service work for staff and an increased range of extra curricular sporting activities. We also enjoy strong links with the local Grammar School. The principles of 'Every Child Matters' are reflected in the aims of the school. We aim to provide a secure, happy, caring and stimulating environment in which children are able to expand their knowledge, experience and imaginative understanding, and thus their awareness of moral values, and the capacity for enjoyment.
The school has an ethos which ensures all connected with the school focus on improvement. Central to this is improvement relating to attainment. The development of children's literacy skills is of paramount importance and we place emphasis on reading. We have introduced a new phonics scheme to support this as well as a new individualised learning programme for young children who are having difficulty grasping early learning skills.
