When the company began its operations, insurance of Connexional Trust property against fire was the only business undertaken. Fire was a great threat to the Methodist Church at that time and most were caused by stoves or other heating appliances. Trustees came to appreciate the way in which their claims were handled as well as the safeguard against fire losses.
In 1907 the Workmen’s Compensation Act imposed a legal obligation to pay compensation for accidents to employees and therefore created a demand for insurance protection. The company opened an Accident Department to issue Workmen’s Compensation policies.
During World War I the company was one of those appointed as an approved office to act as agents for the Government Scheme of Aircraft and Bombardment insurance. The first war risk claim was a minister’s house in Croydon where windows were broken in a Zeppelin raid.
Detailed description:
In 1920 insurance business started to be placed with the company from the Irish churches. This forged a link with the Irish Methodist Church which has continued since that time. 1920 was also important because the company started to write Public Liability insurance and within three years a combined policy became available to the whole Connexion. The years of the second World War brought obvious acute problems but the staff coped well, despite their depleted numbers.
The company had a close relationship with the Department for Chapel Affairs and dealt with special insurance cover of Methodist properties as required by the War Damage Act. It was noted in 1972 that “the extent of protection afforded by the company’s policies has been generous by any standard, and the premiums charged have compared favourably with any which could have been obtained with safety elsewhere”. The company has continued to serve the needs of the Methodist Church and in the 21st century we carry on by expanding and improving our range of policies to meet the unique and diverse challenges that the Christian community demand.
The company has strived to provide a personal service for 135 years and continues to do so during the modern era when many insurers are becoming faceless multinational businesses.
