Short profile:
Marriage Care runs an Initial Training Course each year designed for students with no or little previous knowledge of counselling. It enables students, who are usually over 30 years of age, to obtain the Diploma in Relationship Counselling awarded jointly by York St. John University and Marriage Care in order to work as Relationship Counsellors for Marriage Care. The Course runs over two years and includes six residential weekends and three training days.
Each trainee also has to complete one hundred hours of supervised counselling. Our volunteers are mainly though not exclusively drawn from within the Catholic community. We provide marriage preparation, relationship counselling, relationship education, a telephone helpline.
We also offer general support and advice to those who want to marry or enter long-term relationships.
Detailed description:
We were established in 1946 in response to the pressure on family relationships following the Second World War. The world has changed dramatically in the past 60 years, but the need for support, education and help in the relationship field remains as great as ever. Marriage Care is a charity operating across England and Wales, from 53 Centres, with 80 counselling locations. All our practitioners are trained to professional standards and receive ongoing support, supervision and training. If you are interested in volunteering the following links provide more information about how to apply, the selection process and training.

If you are interested in volunteering the following links provide more information about how to apply, the selection process and training. Marriage Care's counsellors are unpaid professionals who have undergone rigorous training and receive on-going supervision and in-service training. This ensures that they are open to work on a non-judgmental basis with clients from all sections of the community. Marriage Care counsellors do not take notes or make tape recordings during a counselling session. Where a counsellor makes case notes following a session, these contain essential information only, to standards of professional practice. Records are marked by reference numbers and identifying information such as names are changed or omitted.
