Short profile:

Princess Katherine with an overall length of 65ft, a 15ft beam and a draft of 4ft 6in, provides fixed seating around tables for a maximum of 84 passengers. Its certificate licenses it as 'a ship plying in smooth waters', although the craft is very stable in the sometimes choppy conditions on the exposed sections of the canal..

Although its all-steel hull dates only from 1988, it is powered by a reconditioned 1952 Manchester-built Gardener 6LW 8.5 litre diesel engine; its smooth 94hp propels the boat at a maximum speed of 11 knots. Those used to sailing inland will appreciate that this breakneck speed is ideal for the 100 - 200ft width of the waters (boat wash isn't a problem), and to ensure a speedy and reliable service.

Detailed description:

The Irwell and Mersey Packet Company have re-introduced two different trips (pleasure cruising dates back before 1900). Six mile round trips to Salford Quays leave the heart of Manchester's historic Castlefield. The boat first travels upstream turning between the restored pump house and the Mark Addy pub and wharf. Returning downstream, the impressive Meridian Hotel stands neat the 18th century quays of the first Mersey and Irwell Navigation Company.

Interestingly, this company was eventually bought out by the trustees of the Bridgewater Canal in 1844 whose successors - The Bridgewater Navigation Company - were taken over by the Ship Canal Company in 1887. There used to be two canals with the junctions onto the short stretch of waterway. Next to the warehouse, the Manchester and Salford Junction Canal's connected to the Irwell and Rochdale Canal.
