Simon gained a BSc. (Hons) in Physics and Electronics with Subsidiary Mathematics from the University of Reading in 1985, always immersed in a technical career. He is also a director of the Association of Security Consultants, a member of the Tavcom Consultancy Group, the CCTV User Group, and associate of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (formerly IEE), and accredited Assessor for the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) on CCTV and related security systems. In addition, he regularly teaches classes at BTEC level 4. Simon works to raise standards in the security industry where the majority lacks the depth of technical knowledge to impartially advise and implement.

As an Engineer with 23 years experience in commercial, military & security systems design including technical sales for large and small security systems companies, his work focuses on surveying, design, cost estimating, specifications, tender processes and managing projects.

In addition, Simon has provided expert witness services in CCTV, access control, electronic article protection and forensic analysis of video and audio recordings. He has developed 3D graphics techniques and software for the CCTV industry, as well as accepting speaking engagements for conferences, television and radio, and commissions to provide several articles for industry periodicals. In 2005 he entered the Security Excellence Awards and was a finalist in the ‘Best Security Consultant’ category.
