It's hard to believe Lakeland is nearly 50 years old! Our story began in 1963, when Alan Rayner, who visited local farms selling animal feed, had the idea of providing farmers with polythene bags to pack their meat and poultry in. You could say we owe our existence to a chicken and a plastic bag!
From the garage of his home in Windermere, he and his wife Dorothy set up a mail order business supplying agricultural plastics and home-freezing products, and their young sons - Sam, Julian and Martin were roped in to count the bags into packs of 100.

Founded in the early 60s, we're a family-owned business with the same strong values of quality and customer care now as when we first started. From selling plastic bags for home freezing from my father's garage in Windermere, to over 4000 kitchen and home solutions today, Lakeland has grown to see us sending out thousands of parcels a day from our despatch centre, and we currently have 55 stores nationwide stretching from Aberdeen to Truro... and more in the pipeline!
