The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 imposes duties on the employer of a wide-ranging and varied nature, underlining the need for health and safety management audits.
Regulation 5 of this legislation states “Every employer shall make and give effect to such arrangements as are appropriate … for the effective planning, organisation, control, monitoring and review of the preventative and protective measures” (ie:- the measures needed to comply with health and safety law). Auditing is an essential aspect of successful health and safety management, and the only way a company can ensure that its management is effective is to arrange for the exercise to be conducted on a regular basis.
A comprehensive audit will examine every aspect of the business in relation to the legal requirements, providing valuable information to management and identifying those areas where attention is most needed.
Many companies would benefit from an initial survey being carried out by a competent external consultant.
