Short profile:
For many years Jennifer Margrave provided legal advice and other services of particular interest to older people and their families, but in 1995 she set up her own practice and built up a team of legal and support staff to assist. Jennifer then took on partners in 2010 to ensure a natural succession.
We offer specialised advice on asset protection, lasting powers of attorney, wills, probate and trusts, and also advice on funding for care and nursing during old age.
We also manage the affairs of those who have nobody else to do so; acting either under a power of attorney or being appointed by the Court. Our professional memberships include Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Private Client Section of the Law Society, and Surrey County Council's Buy with Confidence scheme.
Detailed description:
We are an independent firm with no connection to any large organisation whereby we have worked referred to us for a fee that we pay; we do not pay commission to any other organisation to be included in a list of preferred firms. We are pleased to say that most of our clients are referred to us by other clients, from our website or other direct, personal contact. This means that we ensure we are acting only for you and have no other reason to advise you on a particular course, except in your best interests. If we recommend other organisations, such as financial advisers or other solicitors, it is because we have recommended them in the past and are confident that they have the high level of expertise that you would expect.
Through our work with elderly clients we carry out mortgage-free conveyancing. This could be in the form of clients wishing to downsize or selling in order to go into a care home; we also sell property as part of the administration of estates.
We also carry out deeds of trust involving the multi-ownership of properties, for instance, where an elderly relative sells their own home and moves into a large home with younger members of the family. Such a situation is fraught with problems and a detailed legal document setting out the rights of the different owners is important for all concerned. The same document can be used when parents help to fund their childrens' first properties but may want to have some control on the situation.
