Short profile:
The Intellectual Property Office can help you get the right type of protection for your creation or invention. We are the official government body responsible for Intellectual Property (IP) rights in the United Kingdom. These rights include: Patents, Designs, Trade marks, Copyright.
Detailed description:
We promote innovation by providing a clear, accessible and widely understood IP system, which enables the economy and society to benefit from knowledge and ideas. As an Executive Agency of the BIS we are directed and controlled by corporate governance rules to ensure that we, supply public services of the highest quality, share good ideas, control costs and above all deliver what we are supposed to. Patents protect the methods and processes that make things work. We can help you decide if a patent is the right type of protection for your invention.
Trade marks (brands) inform your customers that the goods and services on which they are used come from you. Your brand is important and in order to protect it, you should register it as a trade mark. Copyright protects written, theatrical, musical and artistic works as well as film, book layouts, sound recordings, and broadcasts.
Copyright is an automatic right, which means you don't have to apply for it.
