Whilst the company's core business is based on the specialized field of physical model testing, our prime objective is to provide a comprehensive problem-solving service for the water and related industries.

As model studies are often undertaken too late in a project design program, the potential benefits of improved system performance, simplifications to the design of civil structures and the associated reductions in capital cost, cannot always be fully implemented.

In order to ensure that expensive structural design work does not prove abortive, hydrotec can provide an 'up-front' design service, based on desk top computational studies, which will identify and largely eliminate serious hydraulic problems, prior to the more detailed model study optimization. It is for this reason that we strongly recommend preliminary hydraulic design and subsequent physical modeling are undertaken as early as possible within the overall design program.

Detailed description:

hydrotec is housed in a modern office/laboratory building, located approximately 12km to North West of Leeds City center and close to Leeds-Bradford International Airport. The airport offers regular flights to many locations in continental Europe.

The laboratory comprises a free span portal frame building, with an uninterrupted floor area of 450sq.m, and we can accommodate up to fifteen models at any one time.

Examples of models which can be viewed typically include sewage and clean water pumping stations, river models, spillways, inlet works etc. We are happy to show prospective clients around our facilities and to discuss specific projects and the design optimization which can be achieved though physical modeling.

Models are constructed by our skilled fabricators from clear acrylic materials to ensure dimensional stability and enable all hydraulic phenomena, e.g. surface and submerged vortices, air entrapment, deposition, etc., to be clearly identified and studied. Each model operates completely independently, with its dedicated circulating pumps, calibrated flow measurement and control valves.
