The House O'Hill is a lovely hotel. The food is excellent, the people are lovely. Our favourite hotel so far by a long way - a shame we couldn't stay longer." The House o' Hill is situated in the very quiet and very small hamlet of Bargennan near Glentrool on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park. Close by is the Glentrool Forest Visitor Centre and Loch Trool, a spectacular loch overlooked by Bruces Stone, a monument commemorating King Robert the Bruce's victory over the Earl of Northampton's army in 1307.
The Merrick, the South Scotland's highest mountain at nearly 2, 800ft, can be climbed from here. The Galloway Forest Park, the UK's largest forest wildnerness, is also the only officially designated Dark Skies Park outside North America. Because of the very low population, there is virtually no light pollution, making this area ideal for astronomers to view the night skies.
The park is a stunning wilderness where it is possible to walk for miles without meeting another soul - the perfect retreat away from it all! There are many walking trails designed for all abilities from light walks to walks for the more experienced. The park also has the best mountain biking trails outside North America.
Also close by is the Southern Upland Way coast to coast walk. It runs 212 miles (340 km) from Portpatrick on the south-west coast of Scotland to Cockburnspath on the eastern seaboard and passes a few hundred yards from the House o' Hill Hotel, making the Hotel the perfect stopping off point for refreshments and a well earned rest!
