Short profile:

Established in 1973, Home-Start UK is the UK’s leading family support organisation, working with approximately 31, 000 families and 67, 000 children each year. Home-Start Wandsworth became a fully incorporated charity in 2007 and is managed by an enthusiastic and highly skilled group of trustees. All are local to the community of Wandsworth and are passionate about supporting parents with young children, who are finding life difficult for whatever reason.

Detailed description:

Parents may need help for any number of reasons: postnatal depression, disability, social isolation and lack of support, being new to the area, bereavement or illness. Our trained, CRB-checked parental volunteers are matched with vulnerable families, with at least one child under 5 years. By supporting families for up to 2 hours a week in their home, our volunteers provide much needed support, guidance and friendship.

The Home-Start training for volunteers usually runs over 8-10 weeks, incorporating topics such as: safeguarding postnatal depression support outside the home early learning support. The early learning modules focus on new training designed for our volunteers to work with families, encouraging parental participation in their child’s early learning development.

All volunteers are equipped with an early learning pack of materials provided by both Home-Start UK and the Booktrust charity, Bookstart.
