Short profile:
Holyhead is a small primary school in Wednesbury, in the heart of the Black Country. We pride ourselves on the way that the many different cultures of the local community work calmly and peacefully together. I have always felt that the school is like an extended family and felt welcome and involved since the day I walked in the door nearly 4 years ago.
Standards are high at the school with the children regularly achieving above the expected amount of progress. In the last 3 years we have been in the top 10% of schools for this twice.
School Hours:
Morning: 8:50am to 12:00pm (morning break time 10:30am - 10:45am); Afternoon: 1:00pm to 3:20pm (afternoon break time 2:00pm - 2:10pm); Early Years (Nursery Age) Opening Times: Morning 8:50am to 11:30am.
Detailed description:
Holyhead Primary School was established in 1872. The original building was in Meeting Street. The school moved in 1970 to its current building, which originally was a girls secondary school. Thomas Telford built the stretch of the London to Dublin Coach Road on which the school was built and as the road ended at Holyhead in Anglesey it was called Holyhead Road and hence Holyhead Primary School. A depiction of a coach and horses can be found on the car park entrance of the school.
Holyhead has many advantages. It has spacious teaching areas and extensive grounds. The school is well equipped with interactive whiteboards in each classroom, a well-maintained computer suite and a set of wireless laptops. The children all have the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument in Key Stage 2. They learn to swim from Year 2 onwards. There are a wide range of after-school clubs that are available to attend ranging from sport to art to a very well-attended and successful Homework Club.
Some children have the opportunity to take part in musical and art festivals in the local area. The school also has an excellent Learning Mentor to support children who need a little extra help or encouragement to get them learning successfully.
As a school we have spent much time thinking about the type of school we want Holyhead to be. We decided that we wanted the school to have the following four values as a foundation for how we are at school:
A sense of belonging (to something bigger than ourselves)
High expectations (of achievement, of ourselves and of relationships between each other); An exciting and creative curriculum and environment (to stimulate and motivate); Positive discipline (to build self-esteem, allow everyone to work and to be safe).
