Highlands is an 11 18 mixed, community, comprehensive school serving the pleasant suburban area of west Enfield The school opened in 2000 in new purpose built accommodation with state of the art equipment and since then we have been able to recruit the highest calibre staff available in every curriculum area
Detailed description:
From September 2006 the school has been full with pupils from Years 7 - 13 including a large sixth form.
Highlands’ Governors, staff and myself share a passionate commitment to meeting the varied individual needs of all our students, in order to ensure they leave Highlands with the best possible academic qualifications. We want them to enjoy every aspect of their learning and we want them to develop as individuals, so that they leave us as confident and socially responsible young people who are well equipped to contribute to society and enjoy success in whichever field they choose for themselves.
Highlands, as one of the highest achieving schools in Enfield, is continually looking for ways to raise the level of achievement of our students. We pride ourselves on being a learning community in which every one of us, pupils and staff, reflects continually on how well we perform and seek ways to do things better.
The exciting resources that Highlands offers will be fully exploited for the benefit of your child. They will become assured users of ITC and will be able to apply these skills to enhance their progress in the subject. Pupils will engage in activities that stimulate their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in accordance with National Curriculum Attainment Targets. As a core subject, we are seeking to promote confidence of expression in these areas and encourage autonomous, empowered learners.
Students are assessed in the SATs examinations at the end of the Key Stage in both Writing and Reading, while Speaking and Listening is assessed in class. Students are also educated in the media and are involved in a range of practical activities.
Students also have library lessons, where they are taught about research techniques, the Dewey Decimal System and how to skim and scan read. Extended writing is expected throughout the course, while students read a wide variety of texts.
