  We recently stayed at Higher Chellew in Badger cottage, on entry into the cottage the musty smell hit you like a damp dishcloth. As the night progressed I was unable to sit on the futon in the lounge as it smelled terrible and was making both myself and my husband feel sick. We reported it the next day but the owners were most upset and described it as just Cornwall Dank. The husband saying "o well nobody has died" the wife stated that she had overcome cancer twice so something like this didnt matter!! While I am happy that she has overcome her illness twice I think it Very inappropriate to use the sympathy car in the way of defense and justification for the problems we were faced with. I said I didnt know how it could be overcome but that I wanted it removed. The husband took the mattress saying that no one sleeps on it so how could it smell of stale sweat and musty, but comments in the visitor book about the lack of comfort of the futon bed said otherwise. They did bring us the cushions from a conservatory suite to sit on but all week we were very uncomfortable. We also had slugs in the cottage every night and one night I even had fleas on me. I didnt report these to the owners as I didnt see the point after the response we got to the furniture problem. They seem to think that because the cottage is classed as 3 star then we shouldnt expect in their words 5 star. Well we didnt but we did expect to be comfortable. The cottage felt damp all week and has terrible condensation problems - their answer to this is to have the windows open to eliminate the condensation. But in September it isnt warm enough to do this and as the cottage has storage heaters you have to put money in a meter for you only get the benefit 24 hrs later and proves to be expensive. We would not stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone. you can get B & B for the same money and breakfast would be provided and the chances are it would be warm and not Cornish Dank.
