Its cyclo-cross season. Check our 'cross calendar here. It is the only remaining venue still in operation from the 1948 Olympic Games with a rich and long history It is run by cyclists, for cyclists of all ages and abilities, competitive and non-competitive. The track is 450 meters long with the steepest part of the banking being 30 degrees.
It was designed this way to make the riding and racing both a pleasure and a thrill. The banking isn't as steep as the indoor wooden tracks, making this an ideal place to introduce beginners and youth riders to track cycling, however it is steeper than most outdoor tracks, making for fast an exhilarating racing - the ideal compromise. It is a vital grass-roots facility and plays a large part in developing top athletes.
Multiple Olympic medalist, and top UK road cyclist, Bradley Wiggins started his riding career at Herne Hill Velodrome.
Herne Hill Velodrome is one of the most exciting race venues in the country and plays host to more open race meetings than any other track in the country. Almost all of these are free to watch. Our Super Series attracts top national and international riders and includes the legendary Good Friday track meet. Former riders include Victoria Pendleton, Chris Hoy, Alex Dowsett and, of course, Bradley Wiggins. We attract elite riders but also offer plenty of training and racing opportunities for novices, youngsters, juniors, women, seniors and veterans. During the winter, Herne Hill adapts into a Cyclo-cross venue and is used for the London League competition.
It's not just about racing, however, and we run a wide variety of training sessions throughout the season. Our cater for beginners and kids from aged eight, up to advanced and specific training sessions. Other highlights include road bike, mountain bike and women-only sessions, and our very popular holiday club for children aged eight to 15. Run by cyclists for cyclists Herne Hill Velodrome is managed by resident cycling club, VC Londres on behalf of British Cycling We believe that everyone should have access to cycling if they want to. All our sessions and races are affordable and most of our race meets are free to spectate, giving everyone the opportunity to participate.
VC Londres VCL are responsible for the day-to-day operational running of the facility and overseeing the schedule of events, sessions and activities. Under the leadership of VC Londres, Herne Hill Velodrome hosts more open track meetings than any other track in the country. When VC Londres collected the keys to the site in 2005, it was semi-derelict after being closed for a number of years. Despite some 'challenging' circumstances, VC Londres has developed a vibrant and significant cycling facility. Herne Hill Velodrome is run by cyclists for cyclists whatever their age, ability or circumstances.
