Short profile:
Hawley Primary school is a Hampshire primary school catering for children between the ages of 4 and 11 years. The school itself was founded in 1854 and now combines the Victorian building with newer facilities built in more recent years. The accommodation consists of 11 classroom bases, all with interactive whiteboards, a large hall, a playground and a large field space. The grounds also include an extensive outdoor learning area for children in Year R, a trim-trail, a vegetable garden and a pond area. We have a new ICT Suite housing 27 PCs and interactive whiteboard, a Food Technology area, Music and Group rooms and a Library space.
Detailed description:
At Hawley Primary School we believe in a broad and balanced curriculum, incorporating the Curriculum Guidance for Early Years and Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum, in well-resourced and stimulating surroundings. This promotes a positive, challenging and enjoyable learning experience which meets all our children’s needs and abilities. To enable all our children to enjoy, achieve and develop creative approaches to thinking and learning, the curriculum is delivered through topics and experiential learning opportunities through visits and trips off site. We also ensure that the children experience a variety of visitors to school such as theatre groups, poets and musicians.
The National Curriculum currently consists of 10 subject areas which children from ages 5 to 14 must study at school. The "Core" subjects are English, Mathematics, Information and Communication Technology and Religious Education. The other subjects are Science, Art, Design Technology, History, Geography, Music, Physical Education and Modern Foreign Language statutory at Key Stage 2.
We strongly believe that children need to develop social, emotional and community skills if they are to participate effectively in our society. It is our awareness of this need which has led to the broad, experiential form of curriculum organisation that we have adopted, and to the inclusion of an extensive Personal, Social and Health Education programme in our curriculum.
The school is divided into mixed age and mixed ability classes with the class teacher responsible for teaching the entire curriculum and specialist teachers for French and Music. We also offer a wide range of extracurricular activities which support and motivate children to achieve their full potential in areas such as sport, the arts, ICT and outdoor learning.
