HANGLETON JUNIOR SCHOOL

HANGLETON JUNIOR SCHOOL

Updated 2 months ago

Short profile:

The school is situated in the suburb of Hangleton on the outskirts of the city of Brighton and Hove. It has been serving the local community for over 50 years.

Our commitment to inclusion and raising standards for all pupils is an integral part of our school. Our joint vision with our attached infant school, with whom we work very closely is: “we learn together and respect individuality. We are determined that everyone will reach their full potential within a safe, inclusive and stimulating environment, where enjoyment and creativity are priorities.”

We all work very hard to ensure the children achieve high standards especially in the key areas of Maths and English. However we also want our pupils to experience a broad and balanced curriculum. Hangleton Junior still provides three residential visit opportunities to enhance the curriculum alongside other educational visits.

Detailed description:

The school has a swimming pool which allows pupils to have a swimming lesson every week for half of the school year with a qualified instructor. Each year the school performs a musical with standards on a par with those you may see in the West End of London! All of these things contribute to a rich and balanced educational experience.

As a school we are committed to a strong working partnership with parents and carers in order that each individual pupil should gain maximum benefit from their four years of education at Hangleton.

Every year we ask pupils, parents, governors, support staff and teaching staff to complete a survey. This gives us feedback on what we are doing well and what you feel we could do even better. These surveys are carefully analysed and the information is used in addition to statistical data to form our School Integrated Development Plan (SIDP). This allows us to create a culture of improvement and adapt to the needs of our community.

This year we are introducing an exciting, new topic-based approach to the curriculum. Staff have been hard at work planning topics which make relevant links between the skills taught in different areas of the curriculum. We are also planning lots of stimulating learning experiences for the year to come which we hope will inspire and enthuse children.

We have adopted this approach for a number of reasons; the primary one being in response to children’s comments in interviews and in class. Many prefer this style of learning as they find it easier to focus on one big picture rather than lots of unrelated ‘bits’. It is also recommended by a recent government primary curriculum review and links to the approach used at Hangleton Infant’s School for the past couple of years.
